Nelly Kikuchi: this applies to the tivo with 542 serial number prefix, which do not have antenna connectors.a tivo is just a personal bought DVR but there is still monthly fees with a tivo this is for the EPG -electronic programming guide or the tv guide.you could also get it thru your cable company and the price for the EPG is taxed on as well.no once you cut the cord of cable you will no longer receiver MTV,ABC family,TBS,CNN, these are cable/satellite only networks only.a TIVO is not a converter box so you would still need one if you dont have a digital tv--Use these instructions if:· you get your TV programming through an antenna· you have a TiVo Series2 DVRAs of February 2009, all over-the-air TV signals will change from analog to digital. Elli Esaw: Like you are considering, I actually canceled my cable and started watching free TV with TiVo and a digital Antenna about 6 months ago.First - to find out exactly what TiVo does, the best thing to do is watch a tutorial or review online on YouTube. Seeing it, will make it much easier to understand! than trying to understand it from reading.TiVo won’t allow ! you to get any channels you aren’t already getting. Since you don’t receive ABC family over the air, you won’t be able to get it on your Tivo (unless you pay for shows per episode using Amazon.com and TiVo) so Internet will be your best source.IMPORTANT â€" people make this mistake alot…only the high definition TiVo’s will allow you to watch over the antenna TV. Those are HD TiVo Series 3 and TiVo Premium. With those, they will replace your digital converter box, so you won’t even need one of those. I had a series 2 and had to upgrade as it wouldn’t work with or without and digital converter.If you don’t want to pay monthly, you can buy a TiVo premier with a lifetime subscription. It’s pricey (Around $500) but will pay for itself fast enough if you can cancel your cable by using it. Also, you can sometimes find bargains on eBay for a Tivo series 3 with a lifetime subscription. The subscriptions are completely transferable.Also, I subscribe to Netfli! x which allows me to watch shows and movies from Netflix right on my TV using TiVo. Since all of the TV channels are digital now, you'll need a TiVo with an ATSC tuner. That would be the TiVo HD and the new Premiere box. Earlier models only had analog tuners, which would require a converter box. I recently picked bu a used TiVo HD on eBay for $100. You may also occasionally find a refurbished TiVo HD unit on TiVo's website for $99, but most have already been sold. An analog TiVo CAN be used with a converter box, but it's a little kludgy....Show more
