Optical and Composite Cable Difference.?

Phillip Modafferi: "..Composite cables out of my PS3 into our receive"You mean a single composite cable to carry DD 5.1 sound? You will not hear any difference between this and using an optical cable. Both types of cables carry the same information. If you are using left/right analog signals - then you are not getting 5.1 sound. You are getting pro-logic at best.Look at the front of your receiver. It should tell you "ProLogic" or "DD/DolbyDigital" or "DTS" while playing a movie....Show more

Christy Tirabassi: The easiest way is to go HDMI to the receiver then HDMI to the TV. However, optical is digital while composite is analog. The best analog can do is quad (four speaker) but is probably only doing stereo while digital can do 7 speakers and a sub. The bottom line is that you will get better audio from the optical cable IF you have a center speaker and rear speakers. If you only have 2 front speakers, there is no difference.By the way, buy a cheap cable speaker o! nline, it makes no difference on a short run....Show more

Nedra Oltz: It would be better if your receiver would accept HDMI input, you would have amazing sound quality. Get optical you will be able to get dolby digital sound which most dvds and games have.
